Master Bedroom Mini Makeover

I love my bedding. I got it right before John and I got married. Its the same colors that I used at my wedding. Blue and Brown. Its such a soothing color combination. However, I wanted a way to freshen up the look of my room without spending much. I have always wanted a canopy bed- but there is a ceiling fan over my bed- and a canopy bed might overwhelm the space since I don't have a very big bedroom. My sister Adrienne found a really cute idea on Pintrest- and I stole it from her. :)

I didnt take a before picture because my camera has been broken for a while. But just imagine a blank wall behind my bed. Now check it out:

A few tips for decorating a smaller bedroom:

1.Use light, soothing colors so it doesn't make the space feel like its closing in on you.

2.Pick something that you're not going to get sick of or something that's so trendy its going to go out of style too soon.

3. Instead of filling up the room with an entire bedroom set, be very choosy about what pieces are going in. Instead of using nightstands which take up floor space (and visual space) I used shelving and mounted directly to the wall. My husband made these small shelves for me. You could also use the unfinished shelves they sell at Michaels and Roberts that have drawers built in. (Last time I priced them, they were about $25 each- much cheaper than buying 2 nightstands)

4. This canopy alternative also helps free up visual space in the room.

5. Purchase bed risers. This was key to solving the storage issues in my room. Bed risers are around $7 at Walmart. I have even see them at the DI. It also gives your bed a more formal look because its nice and tall.

How I did the half canopy and what you will need:

2 curtain rods with mounting hardware

2 curtain panels.

I already had these 2 white curtain panels in my basement that were given to me. Otherwise, you can purchase curtain panels at walmart for about $9 or $10 each.

The original picture that I saw in Pintrest used really nice curtain rods- but the cheapest decorative ones I could find were about $15 each, and buying 2 was out of my budget. SO- I purchased 2 of the plain white metal curtain rods at Walmart. They were about $4 each. I would like to upgrade them someday- but for now these are just fine :) There were REALLY easy to install.

All you have to do is center and mount one rod on your ceiling and one at the top of your wall. The distance depends on how much you want the material to swag and how long your curtain panels are. I was planning on tucking mine behind my headboard- so standard length panels were just fine.

I love the way it turned out. :)

Well, I'll have the same canopy over my bed as soon as I find the bedding I want. :)

I love this! I too have wanted a canopy bed, but have a ceiling fan also. I just might have to steal this from you. My bedroom needs a major overhaul!
